This fragment from St. Francis of Assisi got us thinking about hands in a new way:

Our hands imbibe like roots,
so I place them on what is
beautiful in this world.

Into our head flew images from photographer Tessa Traeger‘s moving series, Voices of the Vivarais, of working people in the ancient province in south-east France. Many of her subjects are holding something, hands placed “on what is beautiful in the world”…

…And that reminded us of a video about Bertjan Pot, known for his designs for Moooi, the Dutch furniture, interior, and lighting design company.

It’s really about the ways hands often seem to divine their way when we make things, without our conscious thought.

I love it when my hands can surprise my head. Your hands are making something and even the thing that you are fully in control of making can surprise you.

See Tess Traeger’s work here.

With thanks to designer Susan Dworski for throwing the video over our transom.
